When applied effectively, long-tail keywords can significantly improve the ROI of SEO. They are typically more profitable, with higher CTRs and higher conversion rates.
The benefits of using long-tail keywords are obvious, but how do you find them?
The following are some of the tools that we use to find long-tail keywords to inform our SEO campaigns.
Google Analytics can show you the keywords that your website is already ranking for and the keywords that are driving traffic to your site. All you have to do is navigate to the ‘Organic’ section of the ‘Traffic Sources’ report to see a list of the long-tail keywords that your site is already ranking for. This can be found in the ‘Acquisition’ section of Google Analytics.
This can give you some ideas as to which keywords you could push more to reach higher positions, and which to maintain so that you keep your prime position in the SERPs. It may even uncover some keywords that are driving traffic to your site that you currently don’t focus on.
If you are also using Google Ads to run a PPC campaign, the Search Query report can be really useful in identifying the long-tail keywords that people are searching for before clicking on your ads. The ones that are most effective at converting visitors into customers can also be applied in your SEO strategy.
Google’s Search Features
Google’s autocomplete feature, and the related searches feature are really effective in identifying relevant long-tail keywords for your site. All you have to do to find these is to type your main keyword into the search engine and look at the other searches that it suggests.
When using Google, you can also see a list of related searches at the bottom of each search page. For example, if you type ‘black running shoes’ into Google, the related searches that it suggests include ‘best running shoes’ and ‘women’s running shoes.’ A business that sells black running shoes for women may consider adding all of these keyword alternatives to their SEO strategy.
Answer the Public
Answer the Public is a dedicated keyword research tool that can help digital marketers quickly find long-tail keywords that are relevant to their business. The best part about Answer the Public is that it is completely free. Simply visit the Answer the Public website and enter your keyword in the search bar. The site will then display a number of possible question-based keywords that searchers may ask when they are looking on Google.
Ubersuggest is also effective in providing relevant long-tail keyword ideas, and will also tell you how easy they may be to rank for.
Quora hosts a vast amount of information. The key advantage to using this over other forms of long-tail keyword research is that the content is written by its users, and as such, is extremely relevant and unique. Arguably, more so than any other platform.
Similar to Answer the Public and Google, all you have to do is enter your main keyword into Quora, and it will let you search for the questions that other people have asked. While you may think that your niche wouldn’t be searched for very often, it will surprise you how many relevant long-tail keyword questions have been asked. Quora also suggests the top questions asked by people related to your business by looking at your search history. As such, you will never run out of keyword ideas because as soon as you log in to Quora, you will see a list of relevant questions. Applying them in your strategy is as simple as just choosing the ones that are most applicable to your business and writing a blog article around them.
Ahrefs Site Explorer
Ahrefs Site Explorer is another effective tool for finding long-tail keywords for your business. The beauty of Ahrefs is that you can enter the domain of a competitor to find the keywords that they are ranking for. This is an extremely simple way of identifying keywords to add to your strategy (as long as they are also relevant to your business, of course).
